    In Māori purakau Poutini is a taniwha, a giant water spirit. He is the guardian of pounamu, or greenstone, which is a sacred stone to Māori people. Poutini is said to swim up and down the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand, protecting both the people and the mauri (spiritual essence) of pounamu.
